Carbon County Weed District Mission

We will strive to preserve the integrity and diversity of our natural resources and agricultural lands within Carbon County and will continue to help the people of Carbon County through education and assistance in the control of noxious weeds.

What are Noxious Weeds?

Noxious weeds are non-native plants that have been introduced to Carbon County through human actions both purposely and by accident. Due to their aggressive growth and lack of natural enemies, these species can be highly destructive, competitive, or difficult to control. It is important to remember that noxious weeds are everyone’s problem. They not only reduce crop yields, destroy native plant communities, and degrade wildlife habitat, they can also damage recreational sites, clog waterways, lower land values, and poison livestock. The Carbon County Weed District can assist you with identifying noxious weeds and give you advice on their control.

Meet the Staff

Brian Ostwald, Carbon County Noxious Weed Coordinator

P: (406) 962-3967
bostwald@co.carbon.mt.us
Brian has been with Carbon County Weed District since 2004. Being in the field and working with the landowners in the county is the most rewarding part of being the Weed District Coordinator. The diverse country and people in this county are the biggest challenges. Born and raised in Montana, Brian has seen the damage to the land caused by noxious weeds and has a passion for their removal. With his staff and Weed Board, he has developed one of the finest weed districts in the state and has made a huge contribution in stopping the spread of noxious weeds.

Pamela Schwend, Assistant Coordinator

P: (406) 962-3967
pschwend@co.carbon.mt.us
Pam started with the weed district as a grant writer in 2006 and has taken on many other responsibilities since then. Raised in the agriculture environment in Montana, she is able to relate to the farmers and ranchers in the county and assist them in weed control issues. Grants and the non-compliance program take up most of her time. Pam is also in charge of the education program for the weed district and wears many hats for this program. What Pam lacks in operating spray equipment she makes up for in grant writing and public relations.

Rob Wallila, Crew Foreman

P: (406) 962-3967
Rob has been the keystone to the success of the weed district since 1993. Born on a ranch near Roberts, he knows every back road and patch of weeds in the county. Rob is the weed identification guru of the county. His mechanical expertise has saved the county thousands of dollars with his ability to troubleshoot and fix breakdowns on the spot. Rob and his crew spray every state and county road along with all FWP, BLM, DNRC lands and all towns in the county. A true Weed Warrior.
